Fast (and more exact) a method consists in using a product known as "Plastigauge". It consists of a round plastic core which is compressed between the loose leaf and a neck of a cranked shaft. After removal of a cover and the bottom loose leaf the deformed plastic core is measured by a special template which is available in the complete set "Plastigauge".

1. On established in the block of cylinders of the engine loose leaves establish a cranked shaft without greasing. Necks of a cranked shaft and loose leaves should be absolutely pure and dry.
2. To cut off some slices of a plastic core "Plastigauge" (they should be slightly shorter, than width of the main bearings) and to establish them on each neck of a cranked shaft.
3. To establish covers with the bottom loose leaves and to tighten bolts of fastening by the demanded moment. In the course of carrying out of measurement of backlashes by a method "Plastigauge" not to rotate a cranked shaft.
4. To unscrew a cover of fastening of the loose leaf, to remove it and to the deformed plastic core to put the scale ruler printed on packing. Comparing width of the deformed plastic core with control width on a scale ruler, to define backlash size.
5. In end carefully to clear all traces of a Plastigauge-material from loose leaves and a cranked shaft.
